Broadcast Journalism

In addition to reporting through writing, I enjoy using broadcast journalism to share stories and feature people and events in my community. Using broadcast journalism adds a dynamic dimension to storytelling, with the addition of visuals and sound. Through this medium, I bring stories to life in a way that engages the senses and emotions of my audience.

By employing broadcast journalism techniques such as interviews, I highlight the diversity of voices and experiences in the community. This medium also enables me to reach a broader audience and offer a comprehensive, engaging approach to storytelling.

As an Editor-in-Chief of The Pitch, I work with Online Managing Editors to plan and organize video coverage for our YouTube channel. I edit all text, audio, video, graphics and other elements of broadcast journalism. I train staff writers on how to use different types of cameras to produce high-quality multimedia. I’ve also used software for videos and photos, including MovieMaker and Canva.

Here are some videos I’ve worked on for The Pitch:

We held a “Teacher Spotlight” series where staff members recorded an interview with a teacher in under a minute, as an efficient way to get to know our school’s teachers. I interviewed Mrs. Gayman, a 10th grade English teacher. We filmed many videos, each time making progress, before achieving this final video result.

I worked with one of our staff writers, Emma Matalia, to produce a video previewing International Week for The Pitch. We filmed clips interviewing students and staff involved in the International Week's preparation process, and I edited them to create a cohesive and engaging video.

I’ve also experimented with using broadcast media along with my articles. For example, in my feature article about the Walter Johnson HS STEP Team, I added a video of their performance along with my photo gallery and written article. I always encourage my staff to produce content that includes multimedia along with their article, including photo galleries, videos and more.

Furthermore, I started my own podcast as part of my organization Simply Soft Skills, with a mission to help teenagers develop a variety of soft skills. In my podcast, I interview teenagers and young adults who are experts in certain areas, such as entrepreneurship and leadership.

I have interviewed Dhruv Pai, the Co-Founder of Kids Helping Seniors, an organization dedicated to supporting senior citizens through COVID 19 and beyond and recognized by a number of national media platforms, including The Washington Post, AP News, CNN, NPR and more.

In this episode, Dhruv shared with us his experience about starting this initiative and offering insights for other high school students who are interested in starting their own program or organization for a certain cause. We discussed challenges, leadership, teamwork, communication and many more soft skills relevant for listening teens.

I have also interviewed Andy Jiang, a storyteller and influencer on TikTok who has made over a thousand videos on the app, with a focus on telling stories from history, current events and other interesting topics. He has garnered over 3.4 million TikTok followers. In this podcast episode, he shared with us his experience about using social media to make an impact. We discussed topics like time management, organization, adaptability and problem-solving.

I’m excited to continue my journey with broadcast journalism, whether it’s interviewing more guests on my podcast, helping staff members create engaging videos, making my own videos or more.
